Titus Groan July 9, 2011 will be the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Mervyn Peake, the author of three remarkable fantasy novels: Titus Groan, Gormenghast, and Titus Alone. To his dismay (and the delight of future readers), he was turned down and drafted into the Army instead, where he began writing “Titus Groan,” the first of the Gormenghast books. This month, just in time for the centenary of Peake's birth, we will see a fourth adventure, Titus Awakes, join the trilogy (Titus Groan, Gormenghast and Titus Alone). The novel bearing his name is more about the world he is born into rather than about Titus himself. Sadly, it wasn't written by Peake; he died in 1968. The reader must come to understand this before anything else and as such Titus Groan, is a complete and very successful novel on its own. Designed by Robert Hollingsworth, the three illustrated paperbacks Titus Groan (first published in 1946) Gormenghast (1950) and Titus Alone (1959) were housed in a case decorated with Peake drawings. The Gormenghast series has seen several adaptations for various media, with one of the most memorable being a TV miniseries co-produced by the BBC and WGBH Boston in 2000. Gormenghast is everything and there is nothing but Gormenghast. For the weak, above all, have their friends. I made slow and steady progress through the first half of book 1 (Titus Groan). It was published in 1946, followed by “Gormenghast” in 1950 and “Titus Alone” in 1959. It is here that I believe Peake wanted to establish a key turning point in Titus Groan's life, to show the beginnings of the path of adulthood that would be explored in future, planned Gormenghast novels. I was drawn to these books as a teen by the cover of the 1986 Methuen edition of Titus Groan . It didn't grab me, The first two books were written closely together, but Titus Alone was published nearly 10 years after Gormenghast. That alone makes things fresh enough.
